About my nickname,

Copper Penny....

My father wanted to name me Penny when I was born, a fact I always considered charming.

He explained to me that where he grew up, in utter poverty in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there was very little of anything for Christmas. But, one year, his father had done extremely well logging and in his stocking was an fresh orange, a stick of peppermint candy and one bright shiny new penny.

He said he thought that penny was the most beautiful thing in the world at that time, always a beautiful memory. He then told me that when he saw me the first time in the nursery, he felt the same way he did the day he found that shiny, new penny. With two beautiful children already, I was the year of good logging gift. <bright smile>

My mother thought Penny was not a "proper" name for a woman, it was a little girls name. And, true enough, I would one day grow up.

So I was named after the "Mona Lisa". The Da Vinci painting was touring America at that time and had heavy news and radio coverage. But, Mona, my mother said, sounded too sad, so she went with Lisa Kay.

Kay means "rejoice"

Anyway, that's where my nickname "Penny" came from; and the Copper was for my hair color!

This is a design I did in Paint Shop Pro to reflect how I feel about my life situation and my nickname.

  Meditation about my nickname,

Copper Penny....

Too strong to break, too giving to crack, copper is flexible but never diminished. A penny, the most humble of money, to remember to remain salt of the earth. Beauty, they say, comes from the polishing and carving of adversity; here then is a one of a kind copper penny. The flaws are as necessary as the design.
